Legion 2010

Legion 2010

So now God’s the villain? Geez. You think that Hollywood will run out of ideas for original villains, heck why not the Almighty Himself? Bad jokes aside, the movie is passable entertainment for those willing to kill some time. But it’s a disappointment because it could be so much more than just “passable entertainment”.

The plot is that God has gone fed up with humans and decides to exterminates us all. Oh dear, whatever shall we do? And it turns out that the savior of humanity is in the form of a desert diner’s waitress’ baby. So all the typical gang of survivors gang up to, well, survive. And help comes in the way of the fallen angel, Michael.

Really, this premise itself is promising, with God being the bad Guy and all, and it could really make for some controversy ala “The Da Vinci Code”. But alas, it took the WAAY easy way out, becoming no different than a “Resident Evil” and “The Terminator” meets “The Da Vinci Code” hybrid of biblical proportions, with completely UNoriginal dialogue throughout. There are darkly funny and gross-out moments, followed by polished action sequences (although the pacing could use a touch-up, there are quite few action scenes compared to the slow moments). It’s clichéd, but does it mean it’s bad? Nope. It’s not really that bad. I’ve seen much worse. It’s easy on the brain, that means you don’t have to think to watch it, but there’s a 60/40 chance of suspending your disbelief. OK, make that 70/30, because there’s quite a number of plot holes (since God is killing us, why not He just do it already instead of having angels do it for him? He is God, after all.)

Now for the performances. Here we got an unusual bunch of actors. Only two of them stand out. Lucas Black shows he’s improved since his “Tokyo Drift” days and flexes some of his acting muscles. Paul Bettany steals the show and makes for a believable action hero. And of course let’s not forget the others. Dennis Quaid and Charles S. Dutton are ever-reliable.

Director Scott Stewart was a SFX specialist before directing (and co- writing) this film, his directorial debut. He seriously needs to work on his writing more, but here’s hoping that his other movie this year, “Priest” (again with Bettany) will be better as his direction is swift and taut. The special effects are above-average, but I must commend composer John Frizzell for his ominous music score.

In short, it’s a mild disappointment. Sure it’s entertaining, but with a unique and bold premise one could hope for so much more instead of a shoot-em-up splat and bang flick.

Controversy? Hey, it’s Hollywood.
